                                       x—crimson

he saw her yesterday, when the sun was out & bright in the sky. he saw her years ago, when the world was ending & all hope was gently placed on a child’s shoulder. he’s known so much of her—likes, dislikes, loves, hates, some preferences, & so on & so forth. all of which was—for the most part at least—still in her to this day, excluding things that were new to her now. maybe she now liked this or that now. it was different, yes—it brought him back the sickening reality that this girl was not actually the may he knew, yes. but it was something steven was slowly coming to terms with.

& here they were, simply chatting about practically nothing at all. only idle talk that anyone could strike up with another. a woman—a mother with two small children in  tow to be more specific—passed them. her nose turned up in a instant, mentally dubbing may as a persona non grata. she ushered her kids far from the two, showing clear distaste in the association between the two.

to say such  was uncommon wasn’t fully true. there were people who were aware of what happened years ago. a horrible accident, a scientific breakthrough, & may. it was clear to most that something had happened. for one: there was the dreadful news of a death. it spread like a wildfire throughout the region. the champion in the making had died! terrible, oh-so horrible! dreadful. then there was the decline of devon corporation. the supply of dive balls, net balls, & so much more painfully decreased.

people in the pokemart noticed, & they talked & they gossiped. then more people began to become aware that devon corps wasn’t acting up to par, & nor was stone. some people caught on, some didn’t. some people talked, some didn’t. regardless, some people still knew to this day, & some don’t.  even so, it was still  a buzz in the air when may was out. there were those who stared & those who snickered.

such an act didn’t go unnoticed. steven went as far as to make eye contact with the person. she did the same. he let go, she moved on with her children—most likely starting to tell them the fuzzed up tale of everything that had happened. most likely adding her own twist to somehow—misinformation from another person who spoke too soon & too fast. that act didn’t go unnoticed by the other, either. may stopped talking, words trailing off as her own gaze followed the person. it hurt a bit, but it wasn’t as if anyone really explained why people looked at her like that or why they spoke to her like they did. she didn’t need to know, anyway.

don’t pay attention to her. she’s probably just having a bad day or something…

his eyes travel back to her, a reassuring smile is put to his face. when the expression isn’t mimicked by the other, it drops completely. it’s the fall of shoulders & the bite of the inside of a cheek. then it’s a quick turn of the head, making sure the lady was actually out of site. horrible that he had to do that, but what was done was done.  now, he needed to get the conversation back on track.

’…you had something to tell me, right? i’m sorry, i didn’t catch the first part of it.

Wandering eyes weren’t something that got past May very much these days— the first couple of weeks after returning from the hospital (?) maybe but after so long of it, it would be hard to ignore just how often she got stares or glares or befuddled glances. Suffice to say that it could be unsettling, especially when many of these people hadn’t regarded her nearly so coldly before.

Seems like everyone was having ‘bad days’ lately.

"Ah…?“ She murmurs, almost a bit dazed when Steven’s voice brings her back to the present conversation. "O-Oh! Sorry, sir, I just got an itty bitty bit distracted! I was just saying that I think Poochy has been a little homesick lately. She whines a lot when I don’t visit mom and dad enough. Kinda weird, huh?”

The thought is dismissed with a small shake of her head. “Hey, but you said I’ve got another doctor’s appointment soon though, right? It’s been, like…. forever… do I really have to keep getting check ups all the time? If somethin’ was wrong with me, you’d figure they would have realized by now, y'know? It’s not like Groudon banged me up that bad anyways… I didn’t even get any scars.”
