Black had to admit, it was much more easier to talk about league things with this girl, even if they had just met. Something in his gut told him she knew exactly what he was talking about at least. Of course he could talk to Cheren about that stuff when they were younger, but now not so much. As much as Black didn’t want to admit it, being just with his Pokemon could be a bit lonely at times. They shared the same dream and all that stuff, so he guessed he really couldn’t complain. The Prez wasn’t exactly one who really got battles like this girl did, if he was being bluntly honest.

“You bet!! Black agreed with a wide smile of his own, “You’re definitely on! ‘Course there should be some time before the League tournament starts if I can get the badge before then! It was still a ways away, and as far as he knew no changes to the date had been made quite yet. His curiosity returned when she mentioned the Battle Frontier and then her own League in the meantime.

“Batle Frontier? Oooh, that’s like that regulated battle place, right?” Black’s brows furrowed together. To be honest, he had only really focused his research on the Pokemon League in Unova rather than other places. He’d heard stuff about the Frontier on the news, but that had really been it.

“Oh—?! Oh!! I’ll catch up real quick!! Black’s fists clenched together. No way was he gonna get left behind!! Though he wasn’t exactly the fastest— no way was he beating any speed records.

“Eh? Someone beat your record?” He blinked with a head tilt, “I guess I’ll hafta work ten times as hard then! Just be sure you don’t forget!

Forget? As if! Sparks like this weren’t something that really slipped Sapphire’s mind— a strong opponent was a strong opponent and it’d take a lot to make her lose sight of a target that interested her enough. Black? He was doing a pretty good job of that already.

Of course, whether or not he continued to do so depended on how these things developed— sure, losing the gym match wouldn’t make him a weak trainer…. but winning it meant something else entirely. Sapphire couldn’t handle dragons; at this point, it was a fact and if this kid could?

He’d have a leg up on her.

The thought it both frustrating and exciting in new ways, the rumble of potential under the surface and anticipation coiling in her gut further and further the more she considers it. Regardless, Sapphire Birch was definitely keeping an eye on him…

“Ha! You betcha, guy!” Comes the brash declaration, complete with a playful punch to Black’s arm. “I figure I’m gonna let ya get back t’that prez-chick… but y’better keep your end’a things! We’re gonna meet again an’ ya better be ready for a proper match next time around! Leavin’ a girl hangin’s unforgivable.”
